Study design
Phase 2 trial
A mid-stage trial exploring whether an intervention shows enough activity to justify larger testing.
What it means
Definition
Phase 2 trial. Phase 2 trials often assess preliminary efficacy, dosing and safety. Results can be encouraging, but they usually require confirmation in larger phase 3 trials.
What it can tell you
It can show how close the evidence is to a real human health outcome.
What it cannot tell you
It cannot prove that a treatment works in people unless human outcome data are available.
Headline trap
Why this matters in headlines
A positive phase 2 result is a signal, not final proof of routine clinical value.
